A Photo Meme

The first one ever, I’d think, and therefore, very exciting. The nature of it – even more exciting. I took over three and a half thousand photographs this year (and there are still a few hours left in the year). To choose one, was a difficult task. I had to, of course, compromise. I have settled for the one below, but before that let me tell you a bit about this meme/tag.

Amit, of A Fine Balance fame, tagged me, who was in turn tagged by Yosso/Ubermensch. And the tag is:

It is simple, easy and gives no room for whining one usually associates with a meme. All you have to do is select and upload one photo that you have clicked this year that is special to you. Could be anything…aesthetic, technical or personal. Also, put in a short note why it is special.

Here is my entry for the tag:

Remembering Candida: The Portal

The Portal, 4 August, 2007, London, United Kingdom

For a while now, I have been amazed by the work of Candida Hofer. While I don’t actually imitate her work (not easy), her photos continue to inspire awe and wonder. While her photos mean many things to people (critics, for example), I seem to have found interesting character in all that she has done. In a way, it has allowed my to explore what photography means to me and develop my body of work, if you can call it that.

I continue to take very uninteresting photos, but once in a while I take a photo, like the one above and really feel good about being a photographer: being able to take photographs.

This one is close to heart because I felt closer to Candida Hofer’s work than ever before. Not in terms of the photograph (like I said above, I won’t imitate her work), but in terms of what photography can mean to you and what you really look and how you show it to the world. With this one, I think I found my photographic ethos. I found new meaning in expressing through pictures.

The fact that I sold two copies of this photograph in my exhibition makes this one even more special. My first exhibition ever and my first sale ever.

It’s even more interesting that I end this year with this photograph on “If I Could See Better”! So thank you, Amit and thank you Ubermensch.

I cannot, for the life of me, imagine leaving this tag unlinked; this one should continue!
